you should definitely know the answers to these questions & more about it before you consider taking it. talk to your regular doctor about it, it's easier if it's a female. it depends on the pill but I'm on Loestrin24fe & it was effective after a week but I waited a month to be safe. you just need a prescription by your doctor for it.

Hi, my mom is a gynecologist OB/GYN yes u do have to get a prescription for it or at any free clinic like planned parenthood. Usually u have to be on the pill for at least a week or a week and a half and PLEASE REMEMBER TO TAKE THE PILL AT THE EXACT SAME TIME EACH DAY. The ones my mom prescribed for me were 28 pills and the last week on the packet was another color these are called reminder pills they make u get your period so if u don't want to be on your period on your wedding night/ honeymoon do not take the last week worth of pills and just continue a new packet. Also if u forget to take you pill take it as soon as u remember but u still might want to use a condom just in case...I hope this helped :)

I would go see a gynocologist and get a vaginal and a rectal Exam. if I were getting married soon .
this way you would know that ever thing is all right front and back he/she can then put you on birth control.
it take about 2 weeks for the pill to kick in ------so have fun

You should just start on birth control now, and don't completely rule out condoms. They make some now that are pretty awesome and really don't get in the way. It's smart to just use both - it further lessens your chance of pregnancy.

thanks. i looked some stuff up but wanted to know from some other people's personal points.
i'm not having s.ex before my wedding night we don't really want to deal with condoms that night or that week of our honeymoon. if i go on the pill like a month before or something does that mean i wouldn't have to use another form of contraceptive for the first week?

Well Googlegirl... this is straight from Google...

"The length of time it takes for the birth control to become completely effective as a sole contraceptive varies depending on the type of pill you use and when you start the packet of pills. You will usually need to use an alternative form of contraception (such as a condom) for at least seven days after starting, but your healthcare provider should be able to tell you exactly when the particular version of the pill you have been prescribed becomes fully effective against pregnancy. It will normally also say on the advice leaflet that comes with your pills.

It is also worth remembering that taking other medications such as antibiotics can reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill, and your doctor may recommend that you use an additional form of protection during this time. Similarly, stomach upsets such as sickness and diarrhoea can affect the absorption of the pill, so again, using an additional method such as a condom can help make sure pregnancy doesn't occur.

Using condoms as well as the birth control pill can protect both you and your partner from STIs as well as providing extra protection against pregnancy."

birth control

Oct 20, 2009 4:27 PM

Does anyone know how long you're supposed to be on birth control before it will "work"? I'm getting married in March and plan on using the pill but I don't know how much in advance I need to start taking it. Any help? Also, do I have to go to a gynocologist in order to get the pill?
Thanks!
